Despite a lull in today's storm, forecasters said a winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Friday with a wintry mix and perhaps a rumble of thunder snow expected to follow the afternoon rain in southeastern Connecticut.

The National Weather Service predicts additional snow accumulation of 1 to 4 inches, with snow falling at a rate of up to 1 inch an hour in some isolated areas.

"Round one has pretty much moved through," said David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

When an area of low pressure passes through the state later this evening, however, precipitation will start as either rain or a wintry mix.

There is a chance for the phenomenon known as thunder snow, a thunderstorm with just plain rain or a combination of both, Stark said. The best chance for moderate to heavy snow comes sometime after midnight.

The snow will wind down quickly thereafter with cloudy skies to start the morning. Friday is expected to be dry, with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s.
