Sierra Club to celebrate spring by drowning a snowman in effigy

New London - The Sierra Club's Southeast Group will sponsor its annual spring social at 5:30 p.m. March 19 at the Nautilus Room at Ocean Beach Park. Festivities will include a poetry reading and the "drowning a snowman in effigy."

This year's ceremony - in which a snowman is ritualistically thrown into the water and bid good riddance - will be the first to take place in Long Island Sound.

The deed has occurred in past ceremonies along the shores of Noank, Gales Ferry, Stonington borough, New London and once in a bucket in someone's living room.

The event is open to the general public. Participants are asked to bring their choice of poetry or prose with a spring theme, or to read from selections provided.

The cost is $18 and will include a light supper. Reservations must be made by Saturday by calling Louise Fabrykiewicz at (860) 444-8916.
