    Fletcher script earns BAFTA

A short film based on a script by Oscar winner and Waterford native Geoffrey Fletcher won a BAFTA recently. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award is the British equivalent of the Oscar, and "Room 8" was named Best British Short Film. In the movie, directed by James W. Griffiths, an Englishman (Tom Cullen, of "Downton Abbey") tries to escape from a Russian prison. The movie was part of The Imagination Series, a project created by Independent Films, Gravity Road and Bombay Sapphire. For the project, filmmakers were asked to create shorts based on Fletcher's script. Hundreds of entries were received, and five were chosen to be produced. They premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year.

Fletcher won the Academy Award in 2010 for best adapted screenplay for "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."
