Stonington - State Sen. Andrew Maynard, D-18th District, is entering the controversy over the proposed $525,000 cut in the 2014-15 school budget by the Board of Finance.

In a Monday letter to a group of school budget supporters who asked him for help, Maynard, a borough resident, said he attended a briefing Monday with Superintendent of Schools Van Riley and school board Chairman Frank Todisco.

Maynard said he shares the parents' concerns about the impact of the cut on students and the community and said he would be happy to contact both the boards of finance and education "to encourage a more cooperative relationship."

Maynard, who is the co-chairman of the Education Subcommittee on Appropriations, said he will check with the state Office of Fiscal Analysis to make sure Stonington is getting the full funding that it is entitled. He said he also plans to attend the public hearing on the budget Thursday at 7 p.m. at the high school.
