Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to host fundraising walks

The Connecticut Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host 11 Great Strides walks around Connecticut in May, including a May 4 walk at Ocean Beach Park in New London.

The walk will begin at 10 a.m., with registration and check-in beginning at 9 a.m. Great Strides is a national walk held in hundreds of cities around the U.S. Tens of thousands of walkers will participate in the walks, which generate critical funds to fight cystic fibrosis, an inherited fatal disease.

Funds raised through Great Strides have helped spur dramatic progress in the lives of those who have cystic fibrosis, the organization said in a news release. Fifty years ago, most children with CF did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are living into their 30s, 40s and beyond. The 2014 national goal of Great Strides is to raise $43 million nationwide for cystic fibrosis research, education and care. Sponsors of Great Strides include Walgreen’s, Abbvie, Stamford Hospital, Nordstrom, Adams SuperFoods, Price Chopper, Freshpoint, Thurston Foods, Nestle, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts and Stop & Shop.

An estimated 30,000 adults and children in the United States and 70,000 people worldwide have cystic fibrosis. It causes debilitating lung infections that lead to premature death. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of a defective CF gene.
