Film tip: "Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me"

This documentary reminded me a bit of the wonderful "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work," another film about a headstrong, talented broad - someone who's facing the woes of aging but still lights up when she's onstage. Elaine Stritch is a brassy Broadway legend. She's a tigress who can make co-workers quake but can just as easily wield a wicked sense of humor and tough-love affection. Talk about a complex character. Filmmaker Chiemi Karasawa gives a fascinating glimpse into Stritch's life, as she slides into her late 80s, fighting to remember lyrics as she prepares for several one-woman performances. She struggles, too, with diabetes and tries to keep her alcoholism at bay. Some celebs pop up briefly to reflect on Stritch, including Alec Baldwin - Stritch played his character's battle-ax mother on "30 Rock" - and the late James Gandolfini, who is warmly charming. I love when a smiling Gandolfini says he's sure that, if he and Stritch had met when they were both 35, they would have had a torrid affair that would have ended very badly.
