Norwich — Dogs and animal control officers were allowed to return to the Norwich dog pound Thursday, as half of the facility's dog runs reopened and power came back on at the facility.

A large pine tree crashed through the roof Tuesday afternoon.

Animal Control Officer Michele Kellough said the city reopened 10 of the 20 dog runs, allowing her to return three of the dogs, a chocolate Labrador retriever and two pit bulls, to the pound. Two small dogs will remain at the Norwichtown Pet Resort & Spa, Kellough said.

"They're where they are safe and sound," she said of the pet resort.

The lab, named Murphy, might not have to stay long, she said. A potential adoptive family was visiting the 4-year-old dog Thursday afternoon.

City Engineer Patrick McLaughlin said an insurance adjuster was expected to inspect the damage Thursday afternoon. City officials might have cost estimates for the repairs and a time schedule for the work by next week, he said.
