Stonington police get new boat

Stonington - The police department has received delivery of its new boat.

The $375,000 boat, which was funded with a federal homeland security grant, arrived at Dodson's Boatyard in the borough after being transported here on a flatbed truck from the Seattle, Wash., boatyard where it was built. A ceremony will be held for the boat later this spring.

The 27-foot vessel features twin 300-horsepower engines, state-of-the art electronics and radar systems, as well as heat and air conditioning. The latter will allow officers to respond to calls in bad weather. Police Capt. Jerry Desmond headed the effort to obtain the grant, which means the town does not have to put money in the budget to fund a replacement.

The new boat replaces the department's 15-year-old boat, which needs engine work. The boat was new when it was donated anonymously to the department.
