Stonington 18-year-old hit by train Friday died of multiple injuries

Stonington — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Monday that the death of 18-year-old Megan Briggs, a Stonington High School student who was struck and killed by a train Friday, remains under investigation.

The medical examiner said Briggs sustained fatal injuries to her head, trunk and extremities.

Police said they responded to the Palmer Street crossing in Pawcatuck for a report that an Amtrak train had struck something on the tracks. Stonington and Amtrak police responded and found Briggs dead on the tracks.

On Saturday afternoon Stonington schools’ Assistant Superintendent Nikki Gullickson sent a message to parents of Stonington High students notifying them that a student had died, and that counseling services would be available to students on Monday.

Capt. Jerry Desmond said Monday he could not comment on the matter as it remains under investigation.
