WATERFORD AWARDED FOR PREPAREDNESS

Waterford - The Red Cross has recognized the town for disaster relief preparedness with the 2014 Community Resilience Hero award.

Town officials accepted the award at the second annual Heroes of Southeastern Connecticut banquet last week.

Waterford Police Chief Murray Pendleton said the town received the award in part because of its disaster response system in which various departments provide shelter space and advise the first selectman in disaster situations.

Pendleton also cited the town's responses to Superstorm Sandy and other natural disasters in the past several years as reasons for receiving the award.
