New London – A Norwich man with a serious New London-based criminal record is facing federal charges following his arrest over the weekend by state, local and federal law enforcement officials.

West Robertson, 31, of Laurel Hill Road, Norwich, was arrested late Friday on a federal criminal complaint charging him with possession of ammunition by a previously convicted felon, according to a spokesman with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Robertson was presented Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge William Garfinkel in Bridgeport and ordered detained. The complaint is sealed.

The charges stem from an investigation by New London police and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives into a May 29 shooting in the area of Alger Street and Riverview Avenue that left a man with multiple gunshot wounds.

Robertson’s arrest late Friday on Atlantic Street was accomplished with the help of a state police tactical team, who at one point used flash grenades during his apprehension following a motor vehicle crash.

New London Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard said he could not provide any further details on the matter, citing a pending investigation. He said Robertson initially was held in New London and later was transferred into federal custody.

Robertson’s criminal history includes several stints in prison on convictions for kidnapping and narcotics-related charges.
