Norwich —  A local man was charged with drunken driving Sunday when police said he crashed his car into another vehicle on Plain Hill Road and seriously injured a 16-year-old teenager in the second car.

Aaron St. Pierre, 19, of 44 Tanglewood Drive, was charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs by a person under 21 years of age and failure to drive right.

Police said at about 8:30 p.m. they responded to the area of 502 Plain Hill Road for a report of a two-car accident.

Police encountered two cars with heavy front-end damage. Police said in one car they found a 16-year-old boy unconscious with a serious head injury. The teen was initially taken to the William W. Backus Hospital and then flow by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital. Police Monday said the boy was still alive and expected to survive.

Police said a 19-year-old male and 21-year-old male, also passengers in the car, were taken to Backus hospital and were subsequently treated and released. A fourth occupant refused medical treatment at the scene.

Officer Zachary Desmond determined that St. Pierre, the driver of the other car, was driving under the influence and placed him under arrest.

He is being held on a $10,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned today in Norwich Superior Court.

Members of the Norwich police Accident Reconstruction Unit and a Drug Recognition Expert assisted in the investigation.
