Torrington — A 10-year-old Torrington girl who was devastated after the bicycle her grandmother gave her was stolen got a pleasant surprise this week — a new two-wheeler donated by a local police officer.
Emma Mabe was facing a summer without a bicycle after someone stole hers three weeks ago, because her family didn't have the money for a new one.
But Monday afternoon, the same officer who responded to the theft showed up with a new bicycle for the fourth-grader. He wished to remain anonymous.
Emma's mother, Tabitha Nieves, told The Register Citizen that she nearly cried when the officer gave her daughter the bike. She says things like that just don't happen much these days.
Nieves says she'll be locking up the new bike inside to avoid another theft.
