Old Saybrook — A police search Wednesday evening of a burglary suspect in the area of Schoolhouse Road forced a lockdown of the neighborhood, but police were unable to locate the suspect.

Residents were asked to keep their homes and vehicles locked overnight.

At around 9 p.m., police asked residents within a mile and a half radius of the Town Park on Schoolouse Road to remain indoors with their homes locked while they searched for the suspect, who according to public announcements posted on the town’s and town fire department’s Facebook pages had burglarized a home in town and then fled in a vehicle that had been stolen from Waterford. The suspect later crashed the vehicle on Schoolhouse Road, the announcements read.

Officers from several area police departments with dog teams spent close to two hours tracking the man in the woods, described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, possibly wearing a white tank top and leathery-looking jeans and with a laceration on his left elbow, according to the announcements.
