    Teen runner hit by car, seriously injured in East Lyme

    East Lyme — A teenage girl was seriously injured Tuesday when she was struck by a car while running on Route 1, just west of Heritage Road.

    Flanders Fire Department and East Lyme police responded to the scene at about 11:50 a.m. to find the unidentified girl in the roadway suffering from multiple injuries, according to Flanders Fire Chief James Levandoski.

    The girl was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment. It is unclear whether she remained at L+M Tuesday evening.

    Route 1, in the area of the accident, was closed for nearly an hour and a half following the accident, Levandoski said.

    The accident remains under investigation. No charges were filed against the driver, who has not yet been identified.
