Navy seaman arrested for alleged abuse of infant

Groton – Town police have arrested a 24-year-old Navy seaman for allegedly causing life-threatening injuries to his 2-month-old son.

Jordan Rittenhouse, 24, of 53 Deerwood Drive in Groton was charged with first-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor.

Police arrested Rittenhouse Thursday in connection with an investigation into severe injuries suffered by his son earlier in the week.

On Tuesday, hospital staff reported the infant’s injuries to police after determining the injuries did not appear to be consistent with Rittenhouse’s explanation of how they occurred, according to Groton Police Lt. John Varone.

After treatment at a local hospital on Tuesday, Varone said the child was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he remained Thursday.

Rittenhouse was held in lieu of a $300,000 bond and is expected to appear Friday in New London Superior Court. Rittenhouse has been a student at the Naval Submarine School at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton since January. Originally from Rockwell, N.C., Rittenhouse entered the Navy in November, according to a Navy spokesman.

Police declined to release any further information about the nature of the child’s injuries.
