Old Saybrook police make second arrest in gun shop theft

Old Saybrook - Old Saybrook police have made a second arrest in the ongoing investigation of the theft of firearms from the Grouse Perch Gun Store that occurred on August 26.

Late Friday afternoon, Old Saybrook police officers arrested John Thomas Randall, 26, of 66 Fenwood Drive, Old Saybrook on a warrant recently obtained for interfering with an investigation.

Police executed a search and seizure warrant on Randall’s home at 66 Fenwood Drive and located objects and materials that caused Randall to also be charged with operating a drug factory.

Randall was processed and is being held on a $75,000 bond. Randall is scheduled to appear in the Middletown Superior Court on Sept. 2.

The first arrest was made Tuesday, when Thomas Russo, 25, of 79 Fenwood Drive was arrested for the break-in and theft of 13 handguns and three high-powered rifles after a stand-off with police.

On Friday, Old Saybrook police recovered three assault rifles which included a Bushmaster AR-15 and loaded assault style shotgun from a wooded area in Fenwick known as the Grove - which is a conservation area owned by the Borough of Fenwick.

    The investigation remains active.

“I am extremely proud of the efforts made by our personnel to get these very dangerous weapons off our streets,” Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael A. Spera, said. “We will continue to work tirelessly to protect our community.”
