    H.S. football / Week 2 preview capsules

    TODAY'S GAMES

    Montville at Waterford, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Montville (0-1, 0-0 ECC Medium); Waterford (0-1, 0-0)

Last week: Montville lost to Windham 25-13; Waterford lost to Platt 47-40

Outlook: Both teams arrived at the 0-1 records quite differently. Montville coach Tanner Grove called his team lethargic, falling behind 19-0 to Windham. Waterford, meanwhile, ran for more than 300 yards and nearly upset Platt, led by Isaiah Jones, Jake Mangual and Chase Speller. ... Montville may look to give the ball more to Jon McCray, who didn't touch it much last week. The Indians also need more accuracy from quarterback Tyler Quidgeon. This could be one of the weekend's most competitive games. And the winner takes the lead in the division.

    Windham at St. Bernard/Norwich Tech, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Windham (1-0, 0-0 ECC Small); St. Bernard/Norwich Tech (0-0, 0-0)

Last week: Windham defeated Montville 25-13; St. Bernard/Norwich Tech was idle

Outlook: This is the division opener for both teams and the season opener for the Saints. Windham was impressive last week, frustrating Montville with the Wing-T. St. Bernard/Norwich Tech will have quite the task to stop backs Gil Torres and Joseph Santiago. Windham quarterback Brody Labbe won his first varsity start last week.

    Fitch at Stonington, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Fitch (0-1); Stonington (1-0)

Last week: Fitch lost to Newington 38-0; Stonington defeated Woodstock 48-7

Outlook: Stonington would like a little revenge for losing the bragging rights of Mystic last season. Based on last week, the Bears should get it. Stonington quarterback Amadi White threw five touchdown passes in his first varsity start, including two apiece to Tyler Burnside and Matt Mitchell. The Bears have won nine of their last 10 games overall. Fitch is a step up in competition from Woodstock, however.

    Ledyard at Griswold, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Ledyard (1-0); Griswold (0-1)

Last week: Ledyard defeated RHAM 48-8; Griswold lost to New London 43-7

Outlook: Ledyard was a program about its offense in the preseason. But its defense stole the show last week. The Colonels had six sacks, including two from Rashan Young and Kyle Zeppieri's interception return for a touchdown. The offense wasn't exactly terrible, either, led by quarterback Ty Ebdon, who threw for 180 yards and three scores. ... Griswold wins the award for Most Brutal Schedule To Start A Season, Ledyard following New London.

    Hartford Capital/Achievement at New London, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Hartford Capital/Achievement (1-0); New London (1-0)

Last week: Hartford Capital/Achievement defeated Quinebaug Valley 38-15; New London defeated Griswold 43-7

Outlook: It's a safe bet New London coach Duane Maranda mentioned last season's game this week. That's because Capital/Achievement handed New London one of its worst losses in many years, 53-14. New season now. And the Trail Blazers must come to Cannamela Field, where the Whalers used four touchdowns from Jelani Lucas and more than 250 passing yards from Danny Maranda to win last week.

East Lyme at NFA, 7 p.m.

Records: East Lyme (0-1); NFA (0-0)

Last week: East Lyme lost to Middletown 37-12; NFA was idle

Outlook: Anybody's guess, really. NFA didn't play last week. Will East Lyme have the advantage, able to make the proper adjustments? This much is true: The Vikings must stop Khaleed Exum-Strong, NFA's top running back. ... This is the first game in NFA football history that will be played under permanent lights on the home field.

    SATURDAY'S GAME

    Valley/Old Lyme at Lewis Mills, 1 p.m.

    Records: Valley/Old Lyme (1-0); Lewis Mills (0-1)

Last week: Valley/Old Lyme defeated Nonnewaug 38-0; Lewis Mills lost to Hyde 54-22

Outlook: The Warriors began defense of their Pequot Football Conference Sassacus Division title with an exclamation point last week. Justin Cheverier ran for 128 yards and quarterback Chris Jean-Pierre, making a smooth transition from wide receiver, had touchdown runs of 10 and 12 yards.
