    Waterford police charge two men in 2011 home invasion

    Waterford – Police on Monday charged two men with multiple felony charges in connection with a three-year-old case involving a home invasion and assault.

    Waterford police said they worked with members of the New London County Cold Case Unit to obtain a warrant for Benjamin D. Stavens, 23, of 40 Gorton St., first floor, in New London and Matthew J. Hamler, 25, of 49 Beacon Hill Road, Waterford.

    Both men were charged in connection with an Aug. 3, 2011, home invasion at a residence on Cross Road in Waterford. Waterford Police Lt. Brett Mahoney said Hamler and Stavens knew the victim. He said the investigation is active and expects additional arrests.

    Both men were charged with conspiracy to commit home invasion, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping.

    Stavens was held in lieu of a $150,000 bond and expected to appear Tuesday in New London Superior Court. Hamler posted a $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 10.
