Dr. I now a fan of the bunt

Idle Thoughts, while waiting for college hoops, TBS to stop broadcasting baseball forever and wondering what ever became of former Georgetown forward Ruben Boumtje Boumtje:

    • Dr. Idle, Dr. I to his close friends, reminds you that the social event of the season happens Saturday from noon-4 p.m. at Filomena's in Waterford.

Come and partake and help out Doug Henton of New London in his journey to attend Connecticut College. Doug is on his way thanks to Mike Buscetto and Chris Soto, among others. But any help in defraying the cost of his tuition over the next two years is appreciated.

    • You keep bunting, Ned Yost.

Love how his unorthodox methods are riling the geeks and their mathematical formulas.

Let's see. If Lorenzo Cain left the station at 3:14 p.m. and got to the ballpark to bunt by 4:22, how would his WAR change if the standard deviation of his VELO is .96321?

    • Are you with Dr. I in petitioning baseball to turn infield hits into illegal defense?

(It can only help Mark Teixeira).

No, really. There's illegal defense in the NBA. Why not MLB? Maybe they'll actually score more runs if the shortstop plays, you know, shortstop.

    • Dr. I believes there is no correlation whatsoever between the cheapest gas prices in recent memory and the proximity of election day.

    Nah. None.

    • Get well soon, Victor Cruz.

    • If Johnny B. Goode opened a law firm with former Heat center Alonzo Mourning, Florida wide receiver Valdez Showers and Maryland cornerback William Likely, the receptionist could answer the phone and give a weather forecast at the same time:

    ("Goode Mourning Showers Likely")

    • If the baseball Giants can win games with Travis Ishikawa and Gregor Blanco as two-thirds of the starting outfield, then this guy Bochy their manager must be a genius.

    • That Jameis Winston really espouses the "integrity" part of the Heisman mission statement, doesn't he?

    • Congrats to former NFA great Kastine Evans, who scored 21 points last week for her team in the Women's British Basketball League.

    Tally ho.

    • Dr. I would take a shot with Stephen Drew at shortstop for the Yanks next season.

    Just sayin.'?

    • So the gutty, gritty BC Eagles beat defending national champion UConn in field hockey.

And the UConn web site has yet to update the outcome of the game.

    A month later.

    Hmmm.

    • So the New York Liberty have parted ways with Bill Laimbeer.

The Libs figure to be about 8-26 next year.

How's that career move looking now, Tina Charles?

    • Auburn grads everywhere must have been thrilled with Cam Newton last week.

    Cam: "Hindsight is 50/50."

    • Reminder to read Ned X. Griffen's high school football blog, "The Lonesome Polecat," especially Tuesdays.

Nedley will take a swing at his own "Bracketology," predicting which teams make the playoffs.

Only unlike Lunardi, Ned has a chance of being correct.

    • Dr. I may become a hockey guy after all.

Looking forward to UConn in Hockey East with our guy Mike Cavanaugh, a terrific coach.

    • Giants 30, Cowboys 21 today.

This is the opinion of Day sports columnist Mike DiMauro.
