    Local roundup: ECC volleyball tournament begins today

    The Eastern Connecticut Conference volleyball tournament begins today with five first-round games - 13th-seeded Wheeler at No. 4 Waterford (3 p.m.), No. 12 Windham at No. 5 East Lyme (3 p.m.), No. 11 Killingly at No. 6 Griswold (3:30), No. 10 Bacon Academy at No. 7 Norwich Free Academy (3 p.m.) and No. 9 Plainfield at No. 8 Woodstock Academy (5 p.m.).

    The top three seeds - No. 1 Ledyard, No. 2 Lyman Memorial and No. 3 Fitch - all drew first-round byes and will host quarterfinal games on Monday at 6 p.m.

    The semifinals (Tuesday, 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.) and championship match (Thursday, 6 p.m.) will be hosted by Plainfield.

    In Friday night matches:

    • Mae Sefransky had 28 assists and 27 service points as Fitch finished its regular season with a 25-13, 24-26, 25-11 and 26-24 win over Lyman Memorial. Jen Severino added 25 kills and Michelina Pinto 18 digs for the Falcons (17-3).

    • Sophie Swedin had 32 assists to highligh NFA's 25-16, 21-25, 25-14 and 25-23 nonleague loss to Southington. Abby Mattern added six kills and nine digs for the Wildcats (9-9) while Olivia Lane had nine kills and four blocked shots.

    • Old Lyme finished its season with a 25-13, 25-18 and 25-17 victory over Hyde of New Haven in the Shoreline Conference. Megan Cole had four aces and Marissa Smith five assists for the Wildcats, who finish 4-14.

    H.S. swimming

    • Ugne Kirvelevicius won the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.69) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.25) in East Lyme's 97-89 loss to Wethersfield, as the Vikings had their attempt at an unbeaten regular season thwarted on the final day.

    Kirvelevicius also swam a leg on East Lyme's first-place 200 free relay team, joining Melinda Wei, Emma Magna and Gretchen Stelter. Also winning events for the Vikings (13-1) were Jazzy Bazinet (diving), Wei (100 freestyle) and the 400 free relay team of Wei, Magna, Tori Poole and Stelter.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Goals by Lizzie Dowds and Alexis Spinnato lifted Waterford to a 2-0 victory over Windham in the ECC. Tessa Dipallina assisted on the goal by Dodds, which gave the Lancers (6-5-2, 5-5-2) a 1-0 halftime lead. Goalie Bekah Sanders stopped three shots for Waterford.

    Women's soccer

    • Elle Wierbicky's goal in the 70th minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave Emerson a 2-1 win over Coast Guard Academy in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Association. The Bears (8-7-1, 3-5), despite holding a 20-5 edge in shots, could only score once, that coming in the 33rd minute when Hanna Jansson headed home a corner kick to tie the game at 1-1.

    Girls' soccer

    • New London (2-13-1) finished its season with a 6-0 victory over Grasso Tech as six different players scored goals: Katie Hanrahan, Mia Santana, Madison Keefe, Rosalie Nicholson, Karen Cuczo and Ashley Riddick.
