Five New London youths charged with robberies and thefts

New London — Police announced tonight that they have arrested five juveniles who they say were involved in a rash of robberies and thefts involving restaurants and markets this month.

Three of the juveniles, not identified because of their age, were on probation, and two of them were under house arrest and had been monitored by ankle bracelets, police said. All were 15 or younger.

Two incidents, according to police, involved teens who called up local restaurants and ordered food to be delivered to a vacant home on Cape Ann Court. When drivers arrived, the teens would take the food. In one case, a driver was assaulted when he wouldn’t let go of an item, police said.

The other two incidents involved a break-in at Elm Street Market and an attempted break-in at Honey Plus Market on Colman Street.

“Officers developed leads using surveillance video and, through multiple interviews, were able to develop several juvenile suspects that resulted in the arrests,” according to a release.

Charges against the juveniles included second-degree larceny, second-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal attempt to commit burglary and second-degree criminal mischief.

Four of the juveniles were involved in all the incidents, with a fifth charged in relation to the Elm Street break-in. All five are being held at the Juvenile Detention Center in Hartford, and police said more arrests are expected.
