Homeless man charged in burglary of Pawcatuck liquor store

Stonington — Police tracked down and arrested a homeless man early Wednesday morning after they say he smashed a window at O’Keefe’s Package Store in Pawcatuck, stole $50 worth of liquor and then hid in the nearby woods.

Lucas P. O’Brien, 20, was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal mischief. The latter charge is for allegedly causing $1,000 worth of damage to the window.

Police responded to a 12:58 a.m. alarm from the store, which is located in the Pawcatuck Shopping Center on Route 1, and discovered the broken window. Shortly after, officers found O’Brien hiding in the woods behind the shopping center.

Police said O’Brien was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of a “preexisting medical problem.” Police continued to guard O’Brien and planned to bring him to New London Superior Court to be arraigned upon his release from the hospital.
