Stonington teacher charged in DUI crash

Stonington — A veteran first-grade teacher at West Vine Street School was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs Wednesday night after police say she crashed her car into a guardrail on Elm Street, causing the vehicle to roll over onto Route 1.

Anne Collette, 52, of 4 Woodland Court, Pawcatuck, also was charged with failure to drive right. Police said she suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. She is slated to appear in New London Superior Court on Nov. 10.

Police said the 8:45 p.m. crash closed Route 1 for about 30 minutes. Both the Stonington Borough and Wequetequock fire departments responded. There were no passengers in Collette’s car.

She has taught in Stonington for 17 years.

Superintendent of Schools Van Riley said Wednesday that he looks at situations such as this on a case-by-case basis and will meet with Collette upon her her return to discuss the incident.
