    Local roundup: Ledyard volleyball has no small task in facing RHAM

    Norwich - Third-seeded Ledyard High School will face its most difficult test of the season when it meets defending champion RHAM in the CIAC Class L volleyball semifinals at 6 p.m. today at Norwich Free Academy.

    RHAM (24-0) is the No. 2 seed and has won five of the last seven Class L state titles. The Sachems swept Ledyard's Eastern Connecticut Conference rival Fitch in the quarterfinals. The Colonels (22-1) are the two-time ECC tournament champions and advanced to the semifinals for the third straight season.

    "I think they're the best team in the state right now until somebody knocks them off," Ledyard coach Rich Duwelius said of RHAM.

    Tonight's winner will advance to the Class L championship match at 4 p.m. Saturday at Glastonbury High School.

    H.S. swimming

    • Fitch/St. Bernard's Meredith Hird was fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.37) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (59.56) at the Class L state championships at Southern Connecticut State University. Hird also led Fitch's 4x100 freestyle relay team to a seventh-place finish in 3:44.10, joining Skyler Pearse, Grace Moriarty and Lauren Roper. Fitch was 11th as a team with 174 points.

    St. Bernard names Feldman

    • Jennifer Feldman was named boys' and girls' indoor track coach at the St. Bernard School, according to athletic director Brendan Case. Feldman is also the coach of the St. Bernard girls' tennis team which won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division title this spring.

    "Jennifer brings a wealth of experience with her to this position," Case said in an email. "... She understands the important role academics play in terms of the growth of our student-athletes and I look forward to her continuing the success of the track program."

    Coast Guard honors

    • Coast Guard men's soccer coach Chris Parsons was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Parsons led the Bears to a NCAA Div. III tournament berth for the first time in 34 years. He won the award for the second time in the last three seasons. Goalie Richie Burns made the NEWMAC first team and teammate Matthew Bogdan made the second team.

    Ashley Dumont made the first team in volleyball and Michelle Hernandez was a second-team pick. Holly Moore made the second team in women's soccer.

    Conn College honors

    • Caroline Martin of Connecticut College was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference volleyball team as a second-team selection.

    Senior All-American Nick DiLeo was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Player of the Week. He scored 10 goals with nine assists, five steals and two earned ejections over the weekend. Teammates Daniel Albers (defense) and Isaih Porter (rookie) made the honor roll.
