He wants to stay if he can afford to

I concur with the writer, "Ready to go south, escape Conn. mess," (Dec. 2), especially the suggestion recommending an income tax break for everyone not just for selected state retirees. In an April NPR call-in talk show, I asked Gov. Malloy about inequities within the income tax system, granting pension tax breaks for retired teachers and uniformed military, with no discounts for the rest of us.

I pointed out to the governor that Social Security income is exempt from state income but capped at $50,000. I also stated that although current military and teacher retirees receive a 50 percent discount, there is no cap to which the discount applies.

At first glance, the tax break for the three groups is the same on the first $100,000 of retirement income. But the tax break for retired teachers and military becomes huge for those receiving pensions well into six figures, which is possible for senior military, flag rank officers, senior educators, professors and superintendents.

The governor thanked me for my comments, and said he'd look into it. Nothing heard since.

Why do I stay? I enjoy living in this part of Connecticut. I do hope the governor will soon get back to the rest of us retirees with some good news.
