    NHL roundup

New York Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak makes a save on New York Rangers' Dan Girardi's shot as Islanders' Thomas Hickey defends in the third period of Tuesday's game in Uniondale, N.Y. The Islanders defeated the Rangers 4-1.

    Islanders 4, Rangers 1

Jaroslav Halak faced more traffic on the ice inside than in the snow outside. He handled both nearly flawlessly and carried the New York Islanders to yet another win over the New York Rangers.

Halak stopped 40 shots, falling 8.1 seconds short of his second consecutive shutout of the Rangers, and the Islanders beat their biggest rivals on Tuesday night in their return from the NHL All-Star break.

"There was nothing outside on the roads," Halak said one day after a snowstorm blanketed the area. "It was easy for us coming in, no cars. It took me less time than usual."

The Islanders have won all three meetings this season with the Rangers, taking the first two at Madison Square Garden and outscoring them 13-4 overall. Halak beat them 3-0 on Jan. 13.

"It looked almost the same," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said." They came out real well. I don't know if it was us mishandling (the puck) or a combination of that and them forcing us into mistakes, but we made some bad decisions that really cost us."

The Islanders had a shutout streak of 122 minutes, 1 second — their longest against the Rangers, whom they have never blanked in consecutive games.

Carl Hagelin spoiled Halak's shutout bid in the closing seconds.

"Obviously it's disappointing, but we got a win," said Halak, who has 26 wins this season. "It's not like it was a 1-0 game.

"Hopefully next time I will have more luck at the end."

The Islanders (32-14-1) enjoyed a good night after nearly facing a weather postponement. They are tied with Detroit at 65 points atop the Eastern Conference, with a game in hand.

"It was like a playoff game. It was a huge game for both teams," Halak said. "We keep getting points each game.

"The second half is going to be even harder than the first half."

Mikhail Grabovski returned from injury and scored in the first period, Matt Martin doubled the lead in the second, and Ryan Strome and All-Star John Tavares had goals in the third.

Henrik Lundqvist was also sharp for the Rangers in making 34 saves, but spent the third period hearing derisive chants of his name and others proclaiming, "You can't beat us!"

Undeterred by Monday's snowstorm, fans of both teams packed the Nassau Coliseum in the first of three remaining regular-season games between the clubs before the Islanders relocate to Brooklyn. Fans chanted support in alternating fashion, giving the old arena a playoff-like feel.

"We love the atmosphere when we play the Rangers," Martin said. "I didn't have any doubt the fans would show up for this one. They've been here all year."

The Islanders didn't miss a beat in their first game without top-line forward Kyle Okposo, expected to be out six to eight weeks due to an upper-body injury.

Tavares' 22nd goal came on a two-man power play.

The Metropolitan Division-leading Islanders won for the sixth time in seven games and again cooled off the Rangers. In their last 20 games, the Rangers have lost four times, but two were to Halak, an All-Star in his first season with the Islanders.

The Islanders took a 1-0 lead with 1:55 left in the first — a period they dominated 17-10 in shots. Only Lundqvist kept the Rangers from being blown out early.

    Flyers 4, Coyotes 3 (SO)

Wayne Simmonds scored in regulation and got the winning goal in a shootout to lift Philadelphia to a victory over Arizona.

After the Flyers missed on their first two shootout attempts, Simmonds beat Mike Smith for the winner.

Connor Murphy, Martin Erat and Tobias Rieder scored for the Coyotes.

R.J. Umberger and Michael Del Zotto also scored for the Flyers.

Steve Mason was sensational in relief for the Flyers and had 22 saves over the final 2 1/2 periods to help them rally from a 2-0 deficit.

    Penguins 5, Jets 3

David Perron and Brandon Sutter scored power-play goals less than 4 minutes apart in the third period and Pittsburgh rallied for a win over Winnipeg.

Nick Spaling, Steve Downie and Patric Hornqvist also scored for the Penguins. Kris Letang had a career-high five assists as Pittsburgh ended a four-game losing streak despite playing without injured stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Thomas Greiss stopped 19 shots.

Adam Lowry, Jacob Trouba and Chris Thorburn scored for the Jets, who saw their five-game winning streak snapped when they couldn't protect a third-period lead. Ondrej Pavelec made 25 saves but was sloppy in the third period.

Lowry gave Winnipeg the lead 59 seconds into the third before Perron and Sutter delivered on Pittsburgh's patchwork power play.

    Blue Jackets 4, Capitals 3

Cam Atkinson and Fedor Tyutin each had a goal and an assist, and Curtis McElhinney made 25 saves to lead Columbus to a win over Washington.

Mark Letestu and Ryan Johansen also scored, and Nick Foligno, captain of one of the teams in Sunday's NHL All-Star game played on the Blue Jackets' home ice, had two assists. Johansen was the All-Star MVP.

McElhinney, starting in place of top goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who will miss four to six weeks with a groin injury, made several big saves down the stretch.

Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and an assist, and Andre Burakovsky and Troy Brouwer also scored for the Capitals, who have lost four in a row (0-3-1). Braden Holtby made 26 saves and Matt Niskanen had two assists.

    Red Wings 5, Panthers 4

Luke Glendening scored twice and Stephen Weiss had a goal and two assists against his former team to lift Detroit over Florida for its sixth straight victory.

Henrik Zetterberg and Drew Miller also scored for Detroit, and Petr Mrazek made 37 saves in his eighth consecutive start.

The Red Wings have won eight of nine. They beat the Panthers for the first time in three games this season.

Florida has lost five straight games, including four in a row at home.

Brad Boyes, Nick Bjugstad, Brandon Pirri and Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers. Barkov also had a pair of assists.

Robert Luongo stopped 12 of 17 shots and was replaced by Al Montoya with 7:37 left in the second period. Montoya made 10 saves.

    Canadiens 3, Stars 2

Carey Price stopped 40 saves for his 25th victory of the season as Montreal held off Dallas.

Alexei Emelin, Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal.

Jamie Benn and Patrick Eaves had the goals for Dallas, which is four points out of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Kari Lehtonen finished with 23 saves.

Gallagher's power-play goal at 4:37 of the second period gave the Canadiens a 3-1 lead. Eaves scored with the man-advantage at 10:05 to pull the Stars within one, and neither team scored again.

Dallas squandered an opportunity to tie the score late in the third period with another 5-on-3 power play, this time for 1:03.

    Hurricanes 4, Lightning 2

Eric Staal and Justin Faulk each had a goal and an assist to lift Carolina to a victory over Tampa Bay.

Nathan Gerbe and Jiri Tlusty also scored and Jordan Staal had two assists to help Carolina win its third straight. The Hurricanes, 7-2-1 in their last 10, snapped the Lightning's three-game winning streak.

Carolina goalie Anton Khudobin finished with 28 saves for his sixth straight win.

Cedric Paquette and Brian Boyle scored for Tampa Bay. Ben Bishop stopped 18 shots to fall to 5-1-0 all-time against the Hurricanes.

The Lightning had won six straight in the series and nine of the previous 10 meetings.

    Predators 4, Avalanche 3 (OT)

Craig Smith scored on a breakaway at 2:46 of overtime and Nashville beat Colorado.

Roman Josi also scored for the Predators, who pushed the NHL's best home record to 19-2-1. Mike Ribeiro had three assists and Shea Weber two as Nashville improved to 9-1-3 in its last 13 games.

Carter Hutton made 21 saves in earning his second straight home win in place of injured All-Star goalie Pekka Rinne. In overtime, Hutton stopped a shot by Zach Redmond. Ribeiro then passed to Smith, who beat Semyon Varlamov on the glove side.

Cody McLeod, Jarome Iginla and Nick Holden scored for Colorado, which entered 10th in the Western Conference but only three points out of the final wild-card spot.

    Ducks 4, Canucks 0

Frederik Andersen made 17 saves in his third career shutout as Anaheim defeated Vancouver.

Matt Beleskey, Kyle Palmieri, Rickard Rakell and Patrick Maroon scored for the Ducks (32-10-6), who sit atop the NHL's overall standings. They have won six straight and eight of nine.

The Ducks are 3-0-1 against the Canucks this season and 9-0-1 over the last 10 versus their Pacific Division rivals.

All three of Andersen's shutouts have come this season.

Ryan Miller stopped 20 shots for Vancouver.

    Flames 4, Sabres 1

Flames rookie Johnny Gaudreau scored twice to lead Calgary past Buffalo, extending the Sabres' team-record losing streak to 12 games.

Joe Colborne and Josh Jooris also scored to help Calgary win for the fifth time in six games.

Chris Stewart had the lone goal for Buffalo (14-31-3).

Jooris gave Calgary a 2-1 lead at 9:05 of the third period. After Colborne jammed in a rebound at 14:06, Gaudreau scored his 15th of the season at 17:28. The Flames outshot Buffalo 15-2 in the third.

The Sabres have lost 12 consecutive games, all in regulation. That's the longest streak in the NHL since Pittsburgh lost 13 in a row in regulation in 2003-04.

    Wild 2, Oilers 1

Charlie Coyle scored the tiebreaking goal on a breakaway with 4:23 remaining to lift Minnesota over Edmonton.

Nino Niederreiter also scored for the Wild, who snapped a two-game skid and have three wins in their last 11 games. Devan Dubnyk stopped 23 shots.

Boyd Gordon scored for the Oilers, who were coming off a rare two-game winning streak. They dropped to 3-20-8 this season against fellow Western Conference opponents. Viktor Fasth finished with 27 saves.
