    Post-game breakdown: East Carolina

UConn played about 13 minutes of nearly perfect basketball on Wednesday night.

During that stretch in the second half, the Huskies went on a 14-0 and a 17-0 run and held East Carolina without a field goal.

It was enough to carry them to a satisfying 65-52 victory in an American Athletic Conference game at Gampel Pavilion.

"Getting a home win is huge for us," senior Ryan Boatright said.

UConn improved to 12-9 overall, 5-4 in the conference.

      Here’s a post-game breakdown:

-- Freshman Daniel Hamilton continues to impress. Swinging between the three and four position, he impacted the game in several ways, finishing with nine points, a game-high 11 rebounds and five assists. He didn’t have turnover for the fourth time this season.

Hamilton’s had double digit rebounds in three of the last four games.

B.J. Tyson, one of Hamilton’s main competitors for the AAC rookie of the year award, also played well, leading East Carolina in points (20) and rebounds (six).

-- Ollie made a change in the starting lineup, giving sophomore Terrence Samuel his third career start. Slumping sophomore Omar Calhoun moved back to the bench.

Samuel played a steady game, contributing nine points, five assists and just one turnover in 30 minutes. He also had three rebounds.

“Terrence gave us that little punch that we needed,” Ollie said. “That’s why I wanted to insert him into the starting lineup.”

Samuel limped off the court with 2:21 left after a suffering a cramp in his leg.

-- Boatright, a career 35.9 percent shooter from 3-point range prior to this season, is on a tear. He made a career-high seven from beyond the arc out of 10 attempts.

"I make the game easy and take what the defense gives me," Boatright said.

In the last five games, he’s converted 25 of 43 attempts, or 58 percent, from 3-point range.

“I don’t know what he’s doing, but Boat is shooting great,” coach Kevin Ollie said. “We want him to keep it up.”

He finished with 23 points, his 10th game of scoring at least 20 points this season.

“Boatright was obviously the big difference,” East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo said. “You probably say that a lot up here.”

-- The Huskies improved to 7-1 when Rodney Purvis scores in double figures. He had eight of his 10 points in the second half.

-- UConn climbed to 3-2 at Gampel Pavilion this season. East Carolina fell to 0-8 on the road.

-- The crowd of 8,985 was the smallest of the season at Gampel.

-- The teams combined for just 10 free throws. The Pirates didn’t take their first foul shot until 1:37 remained in the game.

-- An injury limited Terry Whisnant, East Carolina’s leading scorer, to just 24 minutes. He scored six points.

-- East Carolina converted 11 of 21 from 3-point range while UConn connected a season-high tying 11 out of 24 attempts.

The Pirates came into the game averaging just 56.1 points in conference games.

-- The Huskies shot 47.1 percent from the field and the Pirates 44.4 percent, but just 33.3 (7-for-21) in the second half.

-- Despite his limited role, junior Phil Nolan played one of his best games this season. He had four rebounds and an assist in 13 minutes. He didn’t attempt a shot.

“Phil didn’t score, but Phil was tremendous on the defensive end, just talking and switching out” Ollie said. “He gave us a big lift.”

Nolan sat out Sunday’s game at Houston due to a hamstring injury.

-- UConn committed a season-low seven turnovers and forced eight.

“I thought we shared the ball particularly well,” Ollie said.

-- It was a quiet night for two starters -- forward Kentan Facey (four points, three rebounds) and center Amida Brimah (four points, two rebounds, three blocks).

-- UConn completes the regular season series with a road trip to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina on Feb. 25.

-- Up next: UConn travels to New Orleans to face Tulane on Saturday. The Huskies have dropped four straight road games. They play three of their next four away from home.
