East Lyme – State police say a 41-year-old Norwich man who allegedly carried out a violent armed robbery at an East Lyme bank Saturday is in custody in New York.

Shawn M. Twomey, of 106 Summit St., Apt. 3, will face multiple felony charges once he is extradicted back to Connecticut, according to state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance. Vance said New York State Police captured Twomey on Monday night.

Twomey will be charged in connection with a 9:10 a.m. robbery Saturday at the Citizens Bank branch at 15 Chesterfield Road in the Flanders Plaza in East Lyme. Police said Twomey entered the bank, rushed to the counter displaying a handgun and yelled orders at employees and bank customers. He was aggressive and threatening during this robbery, Vance said in a press statement.

He fled the scene with a large sum of money and was suspected of being picked up by a vehicle shortly after the robbery. 

Detectives from the State Police Eastern District Major Crime Unit from Troop E in Montville were able to identify the suspect as Twomey less than 24 hours after the robbery, Vance said. An arrest warrant was secured and a search for his whereabouts followed.

Arrangements are now being made with New London Superior Court to extradite Twomey back to the Connecticut.

Twomey faces charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree larceny, risk of injury to a minor, third-degree assault, second-degree threatening and first-degree unlawful restraint. The court has set a $500,000 bond.

Detectives from the State Police Eastern District Major Crime Unit from Troop E worked in cooperation with East Lyme Police Department, Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime, Connecticut State Police from Troop E and Connecticut State Police from Troop H.
