    The Day wins dozens of awards in regional competition

    Theday.com was recognized with two first-place awards at the New England Newspaper and Press Association awards dinner on Saturday night in Boston.

    The first-place awards were for Website Design and Best Overall Mobile Product, recognizing the work of Maria Reagan, Carlos Virgen, Joe Ruggeri, Jill Blanchette and Scott Carthart in redesigning the website on all platforms.

    The judges said the mobile site was “beautifully designed and easy to use. ... Extremely impressive.”

    Those awards were among the 27 The Day received in news categories in addition to 18 advertising awards, which were presented Friday night. Barbara Dunn placed first in the Best Ad Designer category.

    Peter Huoppi garnered six video awards, including first-place awards in Feature Video for a time lapse of a snowstorm and in Sports Video for a feature on a high school football kicker. Huoppi also had two third-place awards in Feature Video, a second in Sports Video and shared a second place with Carlos Diaz and Sean D. Elliot in News Video. Diaz placed first in Entertainment Video.

    Other first place awards went to:

    Greg Smith, Izaskun Larraneta, Judy Benson and Karen Florin, in the Crime and Courts Reporting category, for the “Heroin: Deadly Addiction” series. The judges applauded the series for its “very impressive data and storytelling.”

    Johanna Somers, in the Investigative Reporting category, for a series on the state pension system.

    John Ruddy, in the History Reporting category, for a story on the Hurricane of ‘38. “Ruddy employs an episodic narrative style to animate the human and property toll of this disaster,” the judges said.

    Jill Blanchette and Tim Cotter for an infographic on the UConn men’s and women’s basketball championships. The judges said: “Good job packaging 11 years of data into a reader-grabbing package.”

    The Day placed second for General Excellence.

    Other awards went to Rick Koster, second, Humor Columnist, and third, Arts & Entertainment Reporting; Ann Baldelli, second, Health Reporting; Lee Howard, second, Business/Economic Reporting; Judy Benson, second, Environmental Reporting; Milton Moore, second, Business Page; Somers and Virgen, second, MultiMedia Coverage; Claire Bessette, third, Local Election Coverage; Izaskun Larraneta, third, Spot News Story; Karen Florin, third, Social Issues Feature Story; Kathleen Edgecomb, third, Government Reporting; Kimberly Drelich, third, Transportation Reporting; Elliot, third, Sports Photo; and The Day staff, honorable mention, MultiMedia Coverage.

    Other first-place advertising awards were for: Newspaper Designed Advertising Insert, Special Section/Advertising Supplement, Most Creative Use of Small Print Space, Subscriber Retention Program and Real Estate Display Ad.

    Second-place awards were for: Automotive Display Ad, Themed Multiple Advertiser Page, Real Estate Display Ad, Most Creative Use of Small Print Space, Local Display Ad (Color), and Newspaper Designed Advertising Insert.

    Third-place awards were for: Niche Publication, Automotive Display Ad, Most Creative Use of Small Print Space, Local Display Ad (Color) and Local Display Ad (Black & White).
