Mayor Finizio comes lately to New London's Ft. Trumbull development effort

    xxxxx

Although born in New London, I was not living here at the time of the Kelo eminent domain decision, but since then I have heard varying takes on the case. Susette Kelo's neighborhood is depicted as a pristine suburb where families had lived happily for generations. The neighborhood was in such decline that property values had fallen to a point where no one could sell their home on the open market. I leave the accuracy of what actually happened up to the competent investigative reporters at the Day.

In any case, it's time to move on. To continue visiting a decision about which we can do nothing may make for vitriolic campaign histrionics, but it does nothing to move the city forward. The mayor's remark that the court's decision was "among the vilest in the court's history" may be politically expedient for him, but it makes the rest of us wonder if he's never heard of the Dred Scott Decision.

The mayor so passionately campaigned against all efforts at development by the NLDC/RCDA that one cannot help but be amused that he's firmly supporting them now that the economy seems to be warming up and a viable developer is in the wings. Finally, some real transparency.
