UPDATED: Firefighters battle 2-alarm blaze in New London
New London — Several area fire departments assisted New London firefighters as they fought a second-story house fire at 61-63 Summer St. Saturday night.
Some 30 firefighters battled the blaze, which was first reported at 6:28 p.m. The main area of the fire was knocked down by about 6:40 p.m.
The resident of the second-story apartment was not home at the time of the fire, according to New London Fire Battalion Chief Edward Sargent.
The tenant's dog, which was in the apartment, died in the fire, Sargent said.
There were no reported injuries.
In addition to New London, the Mohegan Tribal Fire Department, Norwich Fire Department, Oswegatchie Fire Department, Submarine Base Fire & Emergency Services, as well as Groton Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial EMTs, responded to the scene.
The Waterford Fire Department also provided mutual aid. The Red Cross and the Providence Canteen were also at the scene Saturday night.
Sargent said it is unknown at this time how the fire started. And the incident remains under investigation.
