Man rescued after jumping off the Niantic River Bridge

Waterford — A distraught man who jumped off the Niantic River Bridge was rescued by a boater, police said Friday.

Police said at 11:11 a.m. they received numerous 911 calls about a distraught man who was in the center of the bridge at the edge of the railing.

The man, later identified as Michael Madera, jumped off the bridge into the water, police said.

A boater in the area immediately retrieved Madera.

Waterford and East Lyme police arrived and met the boater at the state boat launch and assisted Madera off the boat.

Madera was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
