UConn's Jefferson named AAC Defensive Player of the Year
Mohegan — UConn's Moriah Jefferson, Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck were named to the 2016 American Athletic Conference All-Conference first team on Thursday, the day before the start of the AAC's postseason tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Jefferson, Stewart and South Florida's Courtney Williams were unanimous selections to the team, which also included East Carolina's Jada Payne and Temple's Alliya Butts. UConn's Kia Nurse was named to the third team. The team was selected in a vote by the conference's 11 coaches.
Stewart and Jefferson were named to the first team for the third straight year while Tuck made the first team for the second straight year. Stewart averaged 19.6 points and 8.6 rebounds during the regular season, Jefferson 13.1 points and 5.4 assists while shooting 55.7 percent from the floor, and Tuck 12.3 points.
The AAC announced the first of its award winners Thursday, but the major awards — Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year — will be presented on Friday at 2 p.m. during a press conference at Mohegan Sun. Stewart is favored to be the repeat winner.
Jefferson and Tuck received two of those awards Thursday. Jefferson was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Year while Tuck won the conference's Sportsmanship Award. Jefferson was a unanimous pick.
In addition, Tulane guard Leslie Vorpahl was named Most Improved Player of the Year, South Florida senior Shalethia Stringfield was named Sixth Player of the Year and Southern Methodist sophomore McKenzie Adams was named Newcomer of the Year.
UConn also had two players named to the All-Freshman team, Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson. Samuelson is averaging 10.3 points and leads the Huskies with 59 3-pointers while Collier is averaging 6.6 points and 5.7 rebounds.
