    Local roundup: Tigers head for home-opener following loss to Lake Monsters

    Burlington, Vt. — The Vermont Lake Monsters scored four runs in the eighth inning to break a tie and beat the Connecticut Tigers 5-1 in a New York-Penn League game Tuesday before 2,117 fans at Centennial Field.

    Connecticut (3-2) will play its home-opener at 7:05 Wednesday at Dodd Stadium, meeting the Brooklyn Cyclones. There will be fireworks following the game.

    It was the first win of the season for Vermont, which got an RBI single by Miguel Mercedes in the eighth, followed by a wild pitch, an error and a bases-loaded walk to Luis Barrera for the victory. Connecticut tied the game at 1 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Victor Padron, who finished with two hits.

    Connecticut starting pitcher Jose Vasquez threw five innings, allowing one run, and Felix Viloria pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Emanuel Chavez (0-1) took the loss.

    Senior Legion baseball

    • Matt Malcom had two hits, including a three-run double in the sixth inning as Niantic topped Moosup 10-0. Matt Przybysz pitched a complete game, scattering five hits, striking out two and walking one. Niantic is 7-0.

    • John Moody had two hits and drove in a run in Ledyard-Pawcatuck's 5-1 loss to Tri-Town. Ledyard had only one hit through the first six innings. The teams will play game two of a three-game series Wednesday at Tourtellotte.

    • Three Rivers defeated the Panera Pirates 6-5 in eight innings on Monday's opening night, the winning run scoring when Matt McNichol raced home from third on a passed ball. Austin Gillespie had two his and scord twice for Three Rivers while Scott O'Neill singled and doubled for the Pirates, Slater Gregory had a pair of hits, and Eric Javor doubled and scored twice.

    Softball

    District 10 (11-12)

    • Angela Colonis pitched a perfect game with eight strikeouts and had three hits, including a double, and four runs as Waterford downed Groton/Mystic 22-0 in a game called after four innings due to the mercy rule. Maddie Burrows had two hits and three runs for Waterford and Tori Kiefer and Liliana Kramer each had two hits and two runs. Emma Marelli added two hits.

    • Jaylyn Mueller struck out 12 as East Lyme beat New London 13-3 Monday in a four-inning game. Allie LaPlante had three hits and two RBI, Bella Chambers had a hit and three RBI, Sophie Gannoe had three hits and Anna Bonelli stole four bases. Caylee Parker had New London’s only hit.

    • Shea O’Connor pitched a complete game and had two hits as Pawcatuck beat Ledyard 9-0 Monday.  Phoebe Werling had three hits for Pawcatuck and Sophia Bell had two hits. Sarah Cox and Sam Marcotte each had a hit for Ledyard.
