Discovering the excellent Maureen Coughlin crime novels

Let the Devil Out - Bill Loehfelm

It's always fun to discover an excellent new literary crime series — unless the only thing "new" about it is me. Which is to say, author Bill Loehfelm has been writing his grim-but-beautifully-crafted Maureen Coughlin novels for years. In fact, the fourth in the series, "Let the Devil Out," was published a few months ago. But, having just found out about Loehfelm via a chance encounter with "The Devil She Knows," the inaugural Coughlin story, I can promise you'll want to start at the beginning. Coughlin is a tired, 29-year-old bar waitress in Staten Island with an eroding sense of self-worth. But when she accidentally stumbles in on a tryst with her friend/boss, Dennis, and an ambitious local politician named Frank Sebastian, things go further south than she'd ever feared. Maybe with the help of an old cop, Nat Waters, she can get out of an unimagined and deep sewer of sleazy local politics.
