UConn women land nation's top high school basketball recruit

Megan Walker, the nation's top recruit from Chesterfield, Va., announced Thursday that she will attend UConn next season and was one of four players to sign their national letters of intent.

Walker, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward from Monacan High School, made the announcement at her school on Thursday night, choosing the reigning national champions over Texas and Notre.

"It really came down to what I know," Walker said in a story published by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I know the history that they have and I could help them continue that history, that there are top athletes that are already there and I could learn from them, and that I would develop as a player there and I could go on to play in the Olympics or professionally."

Joining Walker next season in Storrs are Mikayla Coombs, a 5-8 guard from Buford, Ga., Alexis Gordon, a 6-0 guard/forward from Fort Worth, Texas, and Andra Espinoza-Hunter, a 5-11 guard from Ossining, N.Y. All three had previously committed to UConn, but Walker waited until Thursday to announce her college choice.

Walker is already a two-time winner of the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year Award and has 1,389 points, 502 rebounds and 186 steals over three seasons at Monacan, which has won back-to-back Virginia Class 4A state titles. She has also played internationally for Team USA, helping the Americans win gold at the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship earlier this year in Valdivia, Chile.

Walker told the Times-Dispatch that her Team USA experience should make the transition to college easier.

"I already have a feel for what it would be like because playing for USA Basketball has kind of prepared me for this with having a set schedule, to workout, to eat right," she said. "There will always be bumps in the road but I don't think it will be too bad."

Her coach at Monacan, Larry Starr, said, "She is the No. 1 recruit in the nation going to the No. 1 program in the nation. It doesn't get much better than that. I just think it is incredible to have had this opportunity to coach a player that is going to UConn."

Coombs, who chose the Huskies over Georgia, Penn State, Stanford and Virginia, is coach Geno Auriemma's first recruit from Georgia since Maya Moore. She averaged 13.3 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists for the Wesleyan School last year.

Gordon considered Baylor, Texas and TCU before deciding on the Huskies. She averaged 24.7 ponits and 9.5 rebounds at L.D. Bell High School as a junior and enters her season year with 1,895 career points and 760 rebounds. Both of her parents played basketball at TCU.

Espinoza-Hunter, who also considered Duke, is a former teammate of two current UConn players — Saniya Chong at Ossining High and Batouly Camara at Blair Academy. She will play her senior year at Ossining after helping Blair win three New Jersey prep titles, averaging 25.0 points and 8.0 rebounds as a junior. She also has international experience with Team USA.
