Former physician from Old Lyme guilty of sexually assaulting patients in Wisconsin

A former physician who once practiced family medicine with the Lawrence + Memorial Medical Group has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting female patients at a clinic in Plover, Wis.

Wilton C. Calderon, 46, of 1 Hawthorne Road, Old Lyme, pleaded guilty in Portage County Circuit Court on Friday to two counts of third-degree sexual assault and one count of manufacture/delivery of a Schedule I, II or III non-narcotic drug, according to court records.  He is free on bond while awaiting sentencing.

The crimes occurred between 2012 and 2014.

Calderon was not charged with any crimes in connection with his practice at the L+M group's medical building on Howard Street, which began in early 2015 and ended later that year when he took a leave of absence. His medical license has since been suspended, according to the state Department of Public Health.

"We cooperated fully at the time, have since moved on and have no further comment," said Michael O'Farrell, spokesman for Lawrence + Memorial.

According to news reports, police in Wisconsin began investigating Calderon after receiving an anonymous tip that he was exchanging medication for sexual contact with a former patient of the clinic where he worked, according to news reports. He was arrested on Dec. 21, 2015, and charged with four counts of third-degree sexual assault and six counts of misdemeanor sexual assault. All but three of the charges were dismissed when he pleaded guilty, but were read into the court record, according to the circuit court website.
