UConn to face Albany in NCAA tourney opener on Saturday

UConn, as expected, earned the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA women's basketball tournament and will play No. 16 Albany in the opening round of the Bridgeport Region at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.

The unbeaten Huskies, winners of 107 straight games and four straight national championships, will face a Great Danes team that is 21-11 and won the America East Conference.

The other first-round matchup in Storrs will be No. 8 Syracuse (21-10) against No. 9 Iowa State (18-12), which means there's the possiblity of a UConn-Syracuse game in the second round on Monday night, a rematch of last year's NCAA final.

If seeding holds to form, No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Maryland and No. 4 UCLA would join the Huskies in Bridgeport for the Sweet 16 on March 25.

Quinnipiac University, featuring Waterford fifth-year senior Adily Martucci, was seeded No. 12 in the Stockton Region and will face No. 5 Marquette, the Big East tournament champion, in the first round Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla. Host Miami, the No. 4 seed, plays No. 13 Florida Gulf Coast in the other first-round game.
