Middlesex Hospital to open cancer center in Westbrook

Middlesex Hospital's new cancer center at its Shoreline Medical Center will be offering a public open house.

The event is scheduled at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center, 250 Flat Rock Place, from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 7.

The accredited cancer center shares space with the hospital's Westbrook medical center, according to a news release the hospital sent Wednesday.

It was the subject of opposition from Yale New Haven Hospital over whether the Office of Health Care Access should allow Middlesex Hospital to replace one of two linear accelerators — used in radiation treatment for cancer — from its Middletown facility and put the new one in Westbrook, the Connecticut Mirror reported.

Middlesex Hospital executives framed the dispute as a matter of competition for cancer care on the shoreline. One of three linear accelerators within 20 miles of Westbrook is at Yale New Haven Hospital's Guilford facility, and two are at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital's Waterford cancer center, now part of the Yale New Haven Health System.

An agreement between the hospital and the Office of Health Care Access requires Middlesex to add equipment that will allow patients to receive their entire course of treatment in Westbrook, rather than having to travel to the main location in Middletown for at least one service, according to a CT Mirror report.

The Westbrook center is scheduled to begin treating patients in November. It will offer all of the same services that patients receive at the Cancer Center's Middletown location.
