East Lyme police, Ledge Light respond to Ebola prank text

East Lyme — A prank text claiming an Ebola virus outbreak was reported to Ledge Light Health District and police Wednesday.

Chief Michael Finkelstein said there is no threat to the public, and the incident appears not to be criminal.

He said Ledge Light had received a call from someone saying that someone else received a text reporting the outbreak, including precautions and a note to contact the East Lyme Police Department. Ledge Light then contacted the emergency management director and created its own public response, saying there was no outbreak.

Ledge Light also contacted the police department, and further investigation found the text had been a prank between two individuals and was not intended to be read by anyone else, including the person who reported it to Ledge Light.
