Local folk group premieres "folk musical" on Friday

It's true that the parameters of folk music have expanded, often dramatically, over the years. Case in point? Local folk group Maggie's Guitar has composed a tune-basted stage play, "Crossing: A Musical Journey," and will debut the production Friday at Unity Hall in New London's All Souls UU Congregation.

The performance is the latest presentation in the "Friday Night Folk" music series, and "Crossing" takes listeners on an 18-song narrative based on a true story of love, loss, redemption, discovery and how a Scottish family came to America in the 1800s. The genesis of the story is rooted in the actual ancestry of Maggie's Guitar musician/songwriter Mike Bailey.

The group, which has toured the Northeast and released three CDs over the years, plans to officially stage "Crossing" in 2018, so this opportunity to catch a preview of the work should make this a special concert.

"Crossing: A Musical Journey," Maggie's Guitar, Friday Night Folk, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Unity Hall, All Souls UU Congregation, 19 Jay St., New London; $17 advance, $20 door, $10 students and military with ID; (860) 443-0316, eventbrite.com.
