As the so-called “critic” who covers books for The Day, I was humiliated to discover that the Willimantic indie rock band Dr. Martino — guests on Thursday’s “Live Lunch Break” episode — are named after a Faulkner short story. Well, I had no idea. Can I quote all of Faulkner’s Nobel acceptance speech? Of course. Do I realize that one of the chapters in his “As I Lay Dying” is written from the perspective of a cow? Certainly! But ... I got nothing on the Martino story. The band, though, represented in a stripped down version by Simone Puleo and Michael Kaminski, performed an engaging, energetic and witty nine-song set. Featuring previously released songs as well as new material, Dr. Martino put on a clinic of smartly written and wonderfully eccentric pop.
