Water taxi resumes Thames River runs May 26

The Thames River Heritage Park water taxi service between Groton and New London will resume operations May 26.

Now in its second full season after a trial run in 2015, the water taxi connects Fort Griswold in Groton to New London's Fort Trumbull and downtown. It will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays through Sundays until Sept. 17.

"The water taxis are authentic Navy launches that were used to transport servicemen and women from larger ships to shore," according to a heritage park news release.

The heritage park ties together historical sites along the Thames River, including the Shaw Mansion, Monte Cristo Cottage, Garde Arts Center, Connecticut College, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the Custom House Maritime Museum in New London and the Ebenezer Avery House, Avery-Copp House, Subvets WWII National Memorial East, Ledge Light and the Submarine Force Museum & Library in Groton.

These sites "tell the stories that shaped our nation during the past 400 years," the release noted. Many are easily accessible from water taxi stops.

Last year, nearly 2,000 people rode the boats during the region's key tourism season.

Ticket will remain $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 4 to 12 and active military, and free for kids age 3 and under. A season pass also is available for $50 at www.trwtllc.com.

Water taxi sponsors this year are Yale New Haven Health/Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, Groton Utilities, The Day, Atlantic Broadband, WNLC 98.7 and Crocker's Boatyard. Additional support comes from the cities of New London and Groton and the Town of Groton.
