    Local college roundup: Fornaro's career day lifts CGA women past Clark

    New London — Senior Meghan Fornaro had a career-high 32 points with six steals, five assists and four rebounds as Coast Guard Academy overpowered Clark in the third quarter of Saturday's 75-61 women's basketball win in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference.

    Fornaro became the first player in program history with 500 field goals, 200 steals and 200 assists in their career.

    Torie Sutherland had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Coast Guard (13-9, 9-4) and Jill Bray added nine points and 12 rebounds.

    In other games:

    • Samantha Ryan had 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals as Mitchell College overwhelmed Lesley in the second quarter en route to a 67-36 win in the New England Collegiate Conference. Jessica Shepherd had nine points for Mitchell (13-8, 12-4) and Lehayla Cruz scored eight.

    • Kate Kerrigan had 11 points and 15 rebounds as Bowdoin beat Connecticut College 73-61 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Payton Ouimette had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Camels (17-6, 6-4) and Willa McKinley scored 15.

    Men's basketball

    • Aaron Lorenzo had 24 points and nine rebounds as UConn-Avery Point edged Mass Bay, 75-72. Ibo Rivera had 10 points and 20 rebounds for the Pointers (4-23) while Tysheen Mcrea and William Orr both scored 16.

    • Donovan McClean had 33 points, five rebounds and four assists as Mitchell beat Lesley 91-86 in the NECC. Parris Hill (25 points, six rebounds) scored nine unanswered points with 11 minutes left in regulation to put Mitchell (8-12, 6-7) ahead to stay. Frank Martin added 10 points and seven rebounds.

    • Ian Converse had 10 points and 20 rebounds as WPI beat Coast Guard 69-60 in the NEWMAC. Micah Baldez had 14 points, four assists and four steals for the Bears (10-12, 4-8) and Ethan Boose had 13 points and six rebounds.

    • Lucas Hausman made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:52 left in the game and scored 28 as Bowdoin beat Conn College 78-71 in the NESCAC. Reserve Lee Messier scored 17 for the Camels (12-12, 3-7) and Bo McKinley had 14 points.

    Men's hockey

    • John Gilmour scored twice and Jake Walman had two assists as defending champion Providence edged UConn 3-2 in Hockey East. Shawn Pauly had a goal and an assist, Max Letunov had two assists and Tage Thompson scored for UConn (9-17-4, 4-10-4).

    Women's hockey

    • Jordan Cross had two goals and an assist as Conn College edged Bowdoin 4-3 in the NESCAC. Julie Beattie had a goal and an assist, Lily Connolly scored, and Katherine Chester had 30 saves for the Camels (14-7-1, 8-5-1), who led 3-1 after the first period.

    Indoor track

    • Coast Guard's Jessica Mulroy won the 5,000 (18:56.26) and Rachel Burchill was fourth (19:35.83) at the Gordon Kelly Invitational. For the men, Kevin Petow (15:51.28), Colton Atkinson (16:30.92), Timothy O’Loughlin (16:30.95), and James Rimmele (16:37.86) placed second through sixth, respectively, in the 5K. Michael Frick and Matt Navetta both cleared 14-11 in the pole vault, but Frick was fifth and Navetta eighth on attempts.

    • Niall Williams, Christian Whitaker, Connor Trapp and Ben Bosworth set a Conn College school record in the distance medley relay (9:56.82) and placed fourth at the Boston University Valentine Invitational. Their time was the fastest in Division III this season and helped the Camels finish fourth. Bella Franz (800, 2:11.50) and the 4x400 relay team of Nick Fischetti, Christian Whitaker, Arlo Siegel and Andrew Peterson (3:26.30) both set school records for Conn. Also, Dan Gossels finished sixth in the 3,000 (9:28.16) at the Gordon Kelly Invitational at MIT.

    Women's swimming

    • Conn College's Olivia Haskell, Shannon Cry, Juliette Lee and Sam Pierce were runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.63) on the opening night of the NESCAC Championship on Friday. Other placewinners were Valerie Urban (500 freestyle, fourth, 4:58.95), Sarah Nappo (50 backstroke, seventh, 27.09), Pierce (200 individual medley, third, 2:03.47), Haskell (50 freestyle, fourth, 23.99), Cry (50 freestyle, seventh, 24.14) and Nappo, Nixon, Urban and Haskell (400 medley relay, fifth, 3:54.82).
