    Local college roundup: UConn advances to AAC baseball title game

    Clearwater, Fla. — Wills Montgomerie pitched seven strong innings as UConn beat Memphis 5-0 Saturday to advance to the American Athletic Conference baseball tournament title game.

    No. 3 UConn (36-23) plays No. 5 Houston for the title at noon Sunday on ESPNEWS. UConn lost to No. 6 Memphis 9-5 earlier in the day, forcing a deciding game. Montgomerie (6-3) allowed three hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Patrick Ruotolo pitched two hitless innings in relief to earn his 10th save.

    Former Fitch standout Aaron Hill homered for UConn, his first of the season. Tyler Gnesda drove in two runs for UConn. Bryan Daniello was 4-for-5 with two RBI for UConn in the opener.

    Women's track

    • Shatajah Wattely of Montville, competing for Southern Connecticut State University at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Bradenton, Fla., earned All-America honors in the 100- and 200-meter events.

    Wattely was fourth in the 100 in 11.78 and fifth in the 200 in 23.89. In addition, Wattely helped lift Southern to a seventh-place finish in the 4x100 relay (52.09) and ninth in the 4x400 (3:43.77).

    • Connecticut College junior Bella Franz placed ninth in the 1,500 in 4:35.80 at the Division III national championship being held at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Franz earned the No. 12 seed in the event run with her performance at the ECAC Championship on May 19, finishing second at that meet in a school record 4:31.96.

    • Coast Guard Academy's Caitlin Piker was 12th in the javelin at the NCAA Division III championship meet. Piker, making her first career NCAA appearance, had a throw of 133 feet, 9.5 inches in her first attempt, which was her best throw of the day. Piker earned All-New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference honors this season with a second-place finish at 121-3 and also took Division III All-New England honors, placing fourth at 129-3.

    Men's track

    • New London's Lee Cattanach finished sixth in the 800 meters at the NCAA Division III championship in 1:52.44, earning All-America honors for the first time outdoors and his third overall. Cattanach earned a spot in the eight-person final after posting a second-place finish out of 20 competitors Friday (school record 1:50.30).

    This year, Cattanach became Eastern's first three-time All-American in a running event (long jumper Jason Edwards is the program leader with four).

    Also, for the second straight year, Cattanach was named to the Capital One Academic Division III All-District Team. Double-majoring in accounting and finance with a cumulative 3.81 GPA through the fall semester, Cattanach was one of 13 athletes selected to the District 2 team and the only representative from the Little East Conference.

    • Michael Lee of New London, competing for Southern Connecticut State University, was seventh in the triple jump at the Division II nationals. Lee jumped 51-4.
