Sun beat Mercury in double OT for fifth straight win

Phoenix — The Connecticut Sun missed nearly every shot they took in the first 12 minutes of Friday’s road game against the Phoenix Mercury.

Connecticut hardly missed in the clutch.

The Sun scored the final 12 points in double overtime to win their fifth straight game, 90-78, and snapped the Mercury’s 22-game home winning streak at US Airways Center.

The Sun shot 18.8-percent in the first quarter and missed 17 of their first 21 shots. They made 6 of their last 8.

“I’m just so proud of this team, how cohesive they are and the chemistry we’re playing with,” Connecticut coach Anne Donovan said. “We just feel really good about where we are right now, and we know we have a long way to go still.

The Sun (5-1) lead the Eastern Conference after back-to-back last place finishes.

“This is definitely a special group,” Connecticut center Kelsey Bone said. “We’re trying to change the culture, but it’s still early. We are trying not to get too high or too low.”

    Bone made 13 of 19 field goals and had a career-high 27 points with a game-high 14 rebounds.

“She’s a big, strong girl,” Phoenix’s Candice Dupree said about Bone. “She’s playing a hell of a lot better than last season and the season before. It’s a struggle, we practiced to go out and trap her, but we didn’t necessarily execute it in the game.”

Alex Bentley scored 19 with six rebounds and three steals for the Sun and Alyssa Thomas added 15 points and nine rebounds.

DeWanna Bonner had 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Mercury (2-3). Dupree added 18 points and six rebounds.

The game was tied at 78 when Bone made a 16-foot jumper with 3 minutes, 10 seconds left in the second overtime.

Bone got the ball in the paint on Connecticut’s next possession, but lost control of it. She dropped to the floor to retrieve the ball and knocked it forward to teammate Chelsea Gray, who was by the 3-point line.

Gray nailed a 25-footer to push the Sun ahead, 83-78. Gray, a rookie, had 10 points, 4 assists and 3 steals in her 20 minutes off the bench.

Connecticut took advantage of the absence of 6-foot-8 Phoenix center Brittney Griner (suspension). Thomas had eight of her team’s 20 offensive rebounds, and the Sun outscored the Mercury in the paint, 56-36.

“Phoenix was the one who really got on the offensive glass (early),” Donovan said. “They had six in the first five minutes. We got a little more disciplined, a little more focused on that. We knew we had an advantage in the paint and we took advantage of that.”
