DVD review: Tilda Swinton makes "A Bigger Splash"
Tilda Swinton is an acting goddess. She commands "A Bigger Splash" with grace and ease, charisma and eloquence. Her eloquence here is almost all physical; her rock-star character is recovering from vocal cord surgery and, on the rare occasions she talks at all, it's in a soft rasp. Her face, though, speaks volumes. Swinton's Marianne is enjoying a vacation with her low-key boyfriend (Matthias Schoenarts) when her ex-love and ex-manager, an entertainingly manic Harry (Ralph Fiennes, enjoying the hell out of the role), turns up. With him is his newly found grown daughter (Dakota Johnson). The characters fall into a flurry of sexual temptations. Based on the 1969 film "La Piscine," "Splash" feels over-the-top and even silly at times, but the actors give it great heart.
