2nd annual Myasthenia Gravis benefit walk takes place Saturday in New London

The second Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Walk takes places Saturday in New London. The short route through downtown New London starts at 10:30 a.m. from the Regional Multicultural Magnet School, 1 Bulkeley Place. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and the fee is $5 per walker.

Myasthenia Gravis is a very rare neuromuscular affliction that affects about 20 out of 100,000 people of all genders, ages and races. It affects all voluntary muscles including those used to swallow, see and breathe; walk organizer Siobhan Carolan-Simpson of New London, suffers from the disease.

“There is no cure for MG, only hope,” Carolan-Simpson says.

In support of the event, Brooklyn pop band Merrily & the Poison Orchard will appear post-race at New London’s Hanafin’s Pub, 310 State St., where the walk concludes, and then at 8 p.m. in the club. For details, call (860) 617-7540.
