    Fitch, NFA, Stonington win state softball quarterfinals

    It was a really good Thursday for Eastern Connecticut Conference softball.

    Fitch, Norwich Free Academy and Stonington all won their respective CIAC tournament quarterfinals and advanced to next week's semifinals at sites and times to be announced.

    The semifinals will be played June 6-8 at West Haven and DeLuca Field in Stratford.

    Newly crowned Connecticut Gatorade Softball Player of the Year Caroline Taber pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as top-ranked Fitch beat No. 24 Mercy, 8-3, in Class L.

    Cassie Woods hit a two-run double and Taylor Wolfgang had an RBI single for Fitch (25-0), the state’s number one team and ECC champion. It will play No. 4 Torrington, which no-hit No. 5 Pomperaug, 3-0.

    No. 5 NFA downed South-West Conference champion Newtown in Class LL, 6-1. The Wildcats will play top-seeded and Southern Connecticut Conference champion Cheshire, which routed Middletown, 9-0.

    No. 10 Stonington outslugged Constitution State Conference champion Wilcox Tech, 16-7, in Class M. The Bears will play No. 3 Seymour, the Naugatuck Valley League champion. Seymour beat No. 6 Granby, 6-0

    In Class S, top-seeded and defending state champion Holy Cross beat Wheeler, 9-6.

    East Lyme girls' lacrosse, which won its 10th straight ECC title this season, lost to second-seeded Branford, 15-6, in a Class M quarterfinal.

    The top-seeded Stonington girls' tennis team took its first loss of the season to No. 12 Weston, 6-1, in the Class S semifinals.

    Eastern Connecticut Conference champion Alex Zuczek of St. Bernard lost to top-seeded Jonathan Miller of Housatonic Regional 6-3, 6-3 at the Class S singles championship.
